Continental-scale Conservation Planning The Baja California to Bering Sea Region
نویسندگان
چکیده
The North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) provides a facilitative body for Canada, Mexico, and the United States to address common environmental concerns and promote biodiversity conservation. The CEC is implementing a North American Marine Protected Areas Network (NAMPAN) with a wide array of partners in governmental and nongovernmental sectors in order to protect marine species throughout their ranges and across these three Exclusive Economic Zones. Identifying priority conservation areas for the Baja California to Bering Sea Region (B2B), is one initiative of this network. Marine Conservation Biology Institute (MCBI) worked jointly with the CEC in a multi-year process of consultation, data gathering, data analysis and GIS development culminating in an experts’ workshop to define priority conservation areas. In this chapter we describe this effort, the workshop to identify priority conservation areas and briefly describe the final output of this process. A total of 28 sites were identified as priority conservation areas (PCAs), totaling 8% of the total Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) area of the three nations. PCAs vary by threat and protection status, but they represent a shared vision of critical places for North America’s marine biological diversity. This portfolio Lance E. Identifying Priority Conservation Areas from Baja California to the Bering Sea
Conservation in the sea is similar to conservation on land; protecting places and species requires identification of appropriate targets for conservation. Many species range across international boundaries suggesting that effective conservation needs to be implemented at both the international level as well as the local level. Here we summarize a tri-national effort between Canada, Mexico and t...

The Baja California to Bering Sea (B2B) Marine Conservation Initiative seeks to establish a network of Marine Protected Areas within the Exclusive Economic Zones of the NAFTA countriesCanada, Mexico, and the United States. This network is designed to capture ecologically significant habitat for marine species of common conservation concern and pelagic regions of high productivity, with due cons...

Bovine tuberculosis (TBB) is a zoonotic disease distributed worldwide and is of great importance for public health and the livestock industry. Several experimental vaccines against this disease have been evaluated in recent years, yielding varying results. An example is the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, which has been used extensively in humans and tested in cattle showing mixed resul...

We examined sea turtle consumption and illegal trade in Baja California Sur (BCS) using data from (1) bimonthly surveys at beaches, fishing camps and dumpsites and (2) semi-structured interviews with fishermen. From March 2006 to February 2008, we found the carcasses of 1014 sea turtles; the meat of 461 of these turtles (45.5%) had been consumed. The East Pacific green turtle Chelonia mydas was...
متن کاملSummer phytoplankton production and transport along the shelf break in the Bering Sea
-A general model is presented for the production and fate of phytoplankton during summer in two regions over the continental shelf of the Bering Sea. We propose that both regions of productivity are supported by nutrients transported into the area with the Bering Slope Current and that the fate of the phytodetritus produced is significantly affected by advection. We hypothesize that one system ...
